Engineers of the South is a planning, environmental, and civil engineering consulting firm established in 2005. We are based in both Birmingham and Florence, Alabama. Our staff has a proven track record of success in the design of conventional and innovative water related infrastructure. We often work as the lead engineer for our clients or within the role of a sub-consultant to other Civil Engineering firms, Architectural Firms, and Private Utility Providers. Our client focused philosophy of service is aimed at providing quality designs that meet or exceed the expectations of our clients. We typically lead and/or support nearly every aspect of our Client’s projects including:

• Providing funding assistance (rate studies, grant applications, etc.).
• Completing studies and alternative evaluations for the identification of client specific and cost effective solutions.
• Assisting with regulatory issues and permitting processes.
• Surveying and land acquisitions.
• Completing detailed design and the preparation of project bid documents, contracts, and specifications.
• Procurement assistance throughout the bidding and award processes.
• Providing construction phase services including office administration, resident observation, preparation of O&M manuals, record drawings, start-up, and warranty assistance.

As a small company, we can offer services with a personal touch and low overhead while providing access to support resources as projects dictate. Our staff’s collective knowledge is diverse but specialized in the water and wastewater fields. We have evaluated and/or designed conventional surface water treatment facilities as well as plants featuring more advanced technologies like membrane filtration. Our experiences include conveyance and treatment for both surface water sources and ground water. We have assisted our clients when considering or implementing a variety of process technologies including membranes, carbon, ion exchange, softening, and alternative disinfectants.

Types of Wastewater Services Offered

Engineers of the South’s staff has many years of combined experience dealing with the challenges facing today’s owners of wastewater collection, conveyance, and treatment facilities. Some of our wastewater capabilities include:

• Compliance assistance and permitting.
• Evaluations and modeling of collection and pumping systems.
• Treatment process evaluations and design.
• Flow monitoring, sewer overflow correction programs, and associated sewer rehabilitation work.
• Discharge and re-use.
• New Wastewater Treatment Plants.
• Rehabilitation and expansion of existing plants.
• De-centralized and on-site wastewater treatment systems.
• Biosolids treatment, disposal, and re-use.
• Complete service from preliminary through construction and start-up.

We have evaluated and/or designed wastewater treatment facilities with features such as trickling filters, oxidation ditches, activated sludge processes, recirculating of sand filters, sequential batch reactors, lagoons of all types, nitrification, nutrient removal, tertiary filtration, flow equalization, drip irrigation, and spray irrigation. We have assisted our clients when considering or implementing a variety of process technologies including membrane bioreactors, biological phosphorus removal, and ultra-violet disinfection. Our experiences with residuals handling include mechanical thickening, dewatering, and stabilization (Class A and B).
